    SEMINAR HELD ON “VRIKSH” DURING INDIAN HANDICRAFTS & GIFTS FAIR (AUTUMN) 2013

    Greater Noida – October 16, 2013 – The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) organized a Seminar on “VRIKSH Timber Legality Assessment and Verification Program – India” during the 36th Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair (Autumn) 2013  here today.

     

    Recently, European Union adopted a regulation titled “European Union Timber Regulation” (EUTR) to combat trade in illegally harvested timber making it illegal to place illegally harvested timber and timber products in the EU market.The EPCH has taken the lead in creating standards that would help provide the proof of legality of wood used in production of wooden handicrafts. The Vriksh standards have been designed to enable wooden handicrafts producers to avoid using illegally harvested wood. Compliance with such standards would demonstrate that the producers are in line with the International regulations like EUTR, Lacey Act and other such legislations that are used around the globe. 

     

    The expert on the subject, Mr. Sachin Raj, Director M/s SCS alongwith his team made a presentation on “Vriksh – Timber Legality Assessment and Verification Programme” during seminar held today on the occasion of 36th edition of Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair (Autumn) 2013. He spoke about the standards which will drive the Vriksh scheme and elaborated on the operationalisation and auditing aspects of the scheme.Mr. A.M. Singh, Joint Secretary, DONER, Govt. of India was also present during the seminar and appreciated Council’s endeavors in creating an indigenous wood certification scheme.

     

    Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director  - EPCH stressed on the need for legality of wood and said that the Vriksh scheme will be a milestone in certification process in India and would help the exporters in proving the legality of wood procurement.   India is one of the major exporters of wooden handicrafts. The exports of wooden handicrafts in the year 2012-13 amounted to Rs.2746 crores.  Europe and USA are the major markets for Indian wooden handicrafts.

    Union Textiles Minister Dr. K.S. Rao Declares The IHGF-Autumn 2013 Open : EPCH

    Greater Noida – October 15, 2013 – Union Textiles Minister Dr. K.S. Rao declared open the four-day-long  Indian Handicrafts & Gifts Fair (Autumn) 2013, being organized by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), at a colourful ceremony here today.

     

    While inaugurating the 36th edition of IHGF, the Minister pointed out that artisans who are the backbone of this industry are not getting proper attention. They do not get their due for their livelihood. Ministry of Textiles is taking all steps for the welfare of artisans and their families.Indian Handicraft sector has full potential and his Ministry will extend all assistance for the promotion of this sector in all possible ways to see that Indian handicrafts products should be seen in each and every country of the world.He further said ‘’there is hardly any emphasis on the research and development of designs and product innovation. Considerable work has to be done by the exporting community to re-orient designs, colours and pattern of the product produced in India to suit the International requirement. All is required is to re-invest, re-design and re-adopt the same to suit the International buying community and develop products suitable to the particular buying region or country.”

     

    Dr. Rao also lauded the role of EPCH in development of design, product technology, adaption, setting up of Common Facility Centres etc. in addition to organizing seminars and workshops, skill development and awareness programmes. All these efforts must have contributed substantially to the promotion of handicrafts worldwide.Dr. Rao also released the Fair Directory.Prof. Abhishek Mishra, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Govt, of Uttar Pradesh said Uttar Pradesh welcomes the holding of fairs of this scale at such a platform. He said Uttar Pradesh contributes 40 per cent of the total export of handicrafts from the country and it is increasing year on year basis from all pockets of handicrafts including Moradabad, Bhadohi, Lucknow, Varanasi and other pockets.

     

    He assured the Uttar Pradesh Government will extend possible help to the exporting community to increase the same further.Earlier in his welcome address, Mr.Lekhraj Maheshwari, Chairman-EPCH informed that IHGF is the only show taking place in Asian continent which has totally domestic participation with International audience whereas in all other fairs held worldwide generally participation is from many countries and visitors domestic and International. Over the years, the Fair on a sustained  basis has attracted large number of buyers from different parts of the world in each of the editions of this event.

     

    Mr. Rakesh, Executive Director, EPCH said  that the present fair has 2500 exhibitors including 900 permanent marts drawn from nearly all corners and parts of the country displaying a very diverse range of product produced out of varied raw material basis. We expect buyers from our leading markets in American and European continents beside many buyers from new and emerging markets in Latin America, Central Asia, Far East and Middle East.

    Two seminars will be  organized during the fair entitled “Vriksh Timber Legality Assessment and Verification System” on 16th October, 2013 and  “Opportunities for Foreign Investment in Handicrafts Sector” on 17th October, 2013 at Board Room of fair venue, he further added.Handicrafts exports registered an increase of 21.43% in Rupee terms and 11.27% in dollar terms during the first six months of the year 2013-14 over the previous corresponding period.  The exports during first six months  of the current fiscal is Rs. 9,266.38  crore, further,  export target of Rs. 21,000 crore during 2013-14 will be surpassed, elaborated by ED-EPCH.   The EPCH is a nodal agency for promotion of exports of handicrafts products from India and projects India’s image abroad as a reliable supplier of high quality handicrafts products
    .
